The Colony Information
While the roots of The Colony can be traced back to the 1800's, it wasn't until the 1970's that The Colony officially became incorporated, and the first family moved into the city in 1974. The city rapidly grew and in 1987, joined with the small community Eastvale and kept The Colony name. The city now has more than 30,000 residents.
There are almost 2,000 apartments in The Colony, giving potential residents a wide variety to choose from. Given the city's smaller size, the percentage of renters is less than the state average of 36%, coming in at 19%. At last count, 4% of those were available for rent, giving new residents plenty of options.
The Colony's Parks & Recreation department offers many ways for kids and adults alike to stay active. The city offers youth basketball, volleyball, softball for girls, and baseball for boys. A joint football and cheerleading program is also offered and is very popular. The adults can get in on the fun with basketball and softball leagues.
Crime is well below the national and Texas averages. The Total Crime Risk has a national average of 100 and Texas as a state rates as an 88. However in The Colony, that number plummets to 20, no doubt in part to the tight nature of the community.
The Colony has become a prime location for business, and the city has established a comprehensive incentive package to encourage economic growth and is committed to efficient reviewing of permits to speed up the process. Many businesses have taken advantage of The Colony's welcome approach to business growth.
The median age of residents falls right at 30 years, giving the city a youthful vibe that can be seen in its active adult recreation programs. Young families will find many other families with which to interact. The Colony also has many great parks throughout the city for everyone to enjoy.
The Colony is close to Plano, Allen and Little Elm, and is really not far from anywhere in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. The city is nestled between Highway 121, the Dallas North Tollway, and Interstate 35. These three major highways can take you anywhere you need to go in the Metroplex. But with more than 4,000 businesses already in The Colony, you may be content just staying put.
