The red poppy capital of Texas is a title that only one city can be called; that city is Georgetown. Located just 25 miles north of downtown Austin, Georgetown is home to thousands of red poppy flowers each and every spring as part of the world famous red poppy festival. This among other activities and historic events are what make Georgetown such a unique suburban city that thousands of people are proud to call home.
According to the most recent census data Georgetown is home to well over 50,000 people which makes it quite a large suburb of Austin. Georgetown is also quite large when it comes to size; Georgetown officially holds close to 25 square miles which obviously explains why there is such a large population within the city. Fortunately along with the area and people Georgetown also has plenty of businesses, companies, and other important commercial ventures to keep everyone employed. Combine all of the jobs available in Georgetown with the jobs and opportunities available in nearby Austin and it is quite easy to see why so many people choose to call Georgetown home. Fortunately Georgetown also offers quite a few highway and interstate accesses that make it incredibly easy to get to other cities like Austin. Interstate 35, and state highways 29, 195, and 130 all pass directly though Georgetown which means there is always an easy route to get to basically any neighboring city or town.
Like many other cities Georgetown started out as a small railroad depot city but in the mid 1900s Georgetown really started to expand. Austin and other nearby cities were beginning to draw thousands of new residents thanks to abundant jobs and as these cities grew many of the suburban cities like Georgetown became popular residential areas. The 1970s are when Georgetown really saw an explosion in population and ever since then the city has been growing quite steadily. Thousands of people move into Georgetown each year and as a result there is always new housing developments being built. Georgetown is a great place to live if you want to have the feel of a larger city without living within a massive city like Austin; Georgetown offers plenty of shopping and businesses without being nearly as large as Austin or other major metropolitan cities and this is particularly why so many people choose the suburban city of Georgetown to live in.
