Cypress, Texas, is located along Highway 290 (Northwest Freeway) 25 miles northwest of downtown Houston. The Cypress-Fairbanks urban cluster (Cy-Fair for short) "ranks 50th in the top 100 highest-income urban areas in the United States."

There are two major hospitals in the area, North Cypress Medical Center and Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital. Cypress Fairbanks is a full-service, 130-bed facility with more than 300 physicians on staff.

According to impactnews.com, "Sysco Corporation has purchased the former Hewlett-Packard call center at 24500 Hwy. 290 in Cypress to create a shared services facility for its North American distribution centers." Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt leased 1,500 square feet in the Stables Town Center. Business is sweet.

With 186 square miles, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is the third largest school district in Texas, 26th largest in the nation. It's the second-largest school system geographically out of 22 districts in Harris County. The ISD served more than 100,000 students in 2008. High schools include Cy-Fair, Cypress Lakes, Jersey Village, Cypress Creek, Cypress Falls, Cypress Woods, Cypress Springs, Langham Creek, and others. Cypress Falls High School is moving toward a standardized dress code for all students.

Cypress is also home of the Lone Star College-CyFair campus. Harris County operates a public library on the campus. There's also the Barbara Bush Library, named after the former first lady, which opened to the public in 2002-3. Since then, Bush has visited the library several times to read stories to children.

Golfing is popular in the area. Public courses include BlackHorse Golf Club, Cypress Lakes Golf Club, Gleannloch Farms Golf Club, Houston Oaks Golf & Country Club, Jersey Meadow Golf Course, Longwood Golf Club and Treeline Golf Club. Private courses include Raveneaux Country Club, Hearthstone Country Club, Champions Golf Club and Pine Forest Country Club.

The Houston Family Arts Center presents mainstage dramas, comedies, musical theatre, and dinner theatre. Through its actors' academy, it also presents a variety of classes and student productions.

Sam Houston Race Park is a 240-acre, Class 1 thoroughbred and quarterhorse racing complex. It has a family pavilion and picnic area, children's playground, and a gourmet food center. The park also hosts off-beat events, like wiener dog races.

The Lakes at Cypresswood is one of the newer apartments in the area. Every floorplan has a golf theme: Augusta, Colonial, Gleneagles, Turnberry, etc. Rents range from $800 to more than $1000. The 10,000-square-foot clubhouse has foosball, HD TVs, Precor treadmills, and elliptical cross trainers. It also has a virtual golf machine, letting residents "play" Pebble Beach, Pinehurst, and other famous courses.

The Cy-Fair "Iron Maidens" is not a musical group...it's a Lacrosse team.
