River Oaks, Texas, developed in the 1940s around what was then Carswell Air Force Base. Though the base has since been renamed the Naval Air Station/Joint Reserve Base, River Oaks is still home to many retired military personnel and their families. The first year that the city appeared in the U.S. Census was 1950 with a population of 7,097, almost exactly the same number as it is today.
River Oaks is located in a wooded area defined by the West Fork of the Trinity River, downstream from Lake Worth. The city, just under two square miles, five miles northwest of downtown, is located within Interstate Loop 820 around Fort Worth.
New construction is slim in the area, though there are developments just down Westworth Blvd./Alta Mere Dr. (Sam's Club, Wal-Mart, Half-Price Books) in the nearby Westworth/Ridgmar Mall area.
River Oaks is served by Castleberry ISD, which also covers a portion of Sansom Park and Fort Worth and serves 3,517 students,.
