The motto of McKinney, Texas, is "unique by nature."
Just 30 minutes north of Dallas, McKinney has all of the advantages of being near a big city, yet still retains a quaint, small-town feel. It's friendly atmosphere, open spaces, and comfortable pace belie the fact that McKinney, with a population of nearly 128,000, is one of the fastest-growing cities in America.
In 2010, McKinney placed 5th in Money magazine's list of "Best Places to Live" ranking of U.S. towns. The list ranked small towns according to the strength of their jobs, fiscal strength, and schools.
Historic Downtown McKinney, part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, is one of the oldest revitalized historic downtowns in Texas. Its 18th century homes, restaurants, and shops contain modern working and living establishments. The modern McKinney Performing Arts Center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The massive Craig Ranch development along highway 121 on the south side of town, a master planned golf community, will feature the Town Center, an 836,000-square-foot development hosting four stories of luxury apartments above 80,000 square feet of retail. It offers wood floors, sunken tubs, and granite countertops.
According to its website, "26 out of 27 campuses is in the McKinney ISD were rated exemplary or recognized by the Texas Education Agency." The city also has a local campus of Collin College.
