Located inside of the borders of San Antonio, Shavano Park is one of many cities that are completely surrounded by San Antonio. Because of a variety of reasons Shavano Park residents have repeatedly and consistently resisted being annexed by the city of San Antonio and as such Shavano Park will likely remain an independent city for quite some time. Given the location and layout of Shavano Park however it should not be surprising that it is really quite small; the official land area of Shavano Park is just under 2 square miles and obviously the city is unable to expand due to being surrounded by San Antonio. Despite the small size of Shavano Park there is actually a surprisingly large population; around 2000 people lived in Shavano Park as of the 2000 census and reports indicate that the population is still growing as more and more apartment buildings continue to be built in various parts of this small city.
Because Shavano Park is a fully independent city there are multiple government agencies that serve the city. Shavano Park has a full police department and full fire department that serve the town; of course San Antonio fire and police crews are also in the area quite often. It is actually somewhat uncommon for a small town like Shavano Park to have their own fire and police crews when a big city like San Antonio is so close so this is just another thing that helps keep residents of Shavano Park safe and protected in an emergency.
Shavano Park residents also have access to multiple public schools depending on which part of the city they're located in. None of the schools are immediately within Shavano Park as they are part of San Antonio but the public school system coordinates things well with Shavano Park and other nearby cities that are separate from San Antonio. Overall Shavano Park is a very popular neighborhood with plenty of features and amenities that make it popular with residents. Obviously the location of Shavano Park is really quite convenient as there is plenty to do in San Antonio. Commuting to any part of San Antonio is also quite simple thanks to the multiple roadways and highways in the area as well as the public transport systems that run through Shavano Park and other parts of downtown San Antonio.
